Date of Establishment of the Department: 1964
Departmental History: The Department of Anthropology, Madhab Choudhury College, Barpeta was established in the year 1964 with Higher Secondary and General Course (Pass Course) at the Degree Level. This is the pioneer institute of the entire lower Assam excluding Guwahati to introduce the subject. The founder head of the Department was Dr.Anil Dev and Dr. Dwipen Barua was the first demonstrator of the Department. The Major course was started in the year 1992. Therefore the Department has a long standing history with a good academic record. Many students both from the H S final and Degree level have came out with flying colours from this department.The Department has its own museum named Gajendra Memorial Anthropological Museum donated by his family established in the year 1994.
The museum is a good repertoire of prehistoric tools, bones and skulls of both primates and modern man including many other ethnographic materials. In 2016, the Department has shifted to newly constructed building having separate Museum cum Seminar Hall and Departmental Library, well furnished staff common room, laboratory and class room
