Being one of the oldest departments in M.C. College, Barpeta, Department of Botany has passed a glorious period of about 53 years since its establishment as an Under Graduate department in 1962. However, the department came into existence in early 1959 along with the Intermediate of Science (lSc.) course under the prestigious departmental headship of D. Shukla. Since that very beginning, the department has been engaging itself in imparting education among the students and local people. The department of Botany initiated to introduce Honours course (now-a-days “Major”) in the subject in late 1970 sand since then the course has been successfully running till date offering quality higher education to the students under the curriculum prescribed by the Gauhati University, Guwahati.
Departmental library: The library is resourceful with a good number of text books, reference books, practical hand books, journals and other periodicals and serving for the benefit of students by fulfilling their needs. There are about 220 nos. of Books, 12 nos. of National and International Journals and a good numbers of periodicals in the departmental library.

(i) Seminar on “Medicinal and aromatic plants of Assam and their prospects” — organized by the Dept. of Botany, M.C. College, Barpeta (Venue: M.C. College; Date: 10-12-2005).
(ii) Popular talk on “Importance of biological diversity and its conservation with special reference to Indian Rhino vision 2020” — organized by the Dept. of Botany, M.C. College, Barpeta (Venue: M.C. College; Date: March, 2008).
(iii) Workshop on “Indigenous plants and their role in conservation of of the envioronment and employment generation” – organized by Dept. of Botany, M.C. College, Barpeta and sponsored by Assam Sc. Society, Guwahati, Assam (Venue : M.C. College; Date: 22-03-2009).
(iv) Awareness programme on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day – organized by Dept. of Botany, M.C. College Barpeta in collaboration with Botanical Society of Assam, India (Venue: Govt. HS School, Barpeta; Date: 30-05-2012)
(v) A UGC sponsored National seminar was organized by Dept. of Botany on “Environmental Degradation and its Impact on Biodiversity in India with Special Reference to NorthEastern Region” on 17-18th February, 2012 funded by UGC, New Delhi, India.
